New mandatory measures have been introduced by the IMO under the framework of the Initial IMO Strategy for Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships.

Ships must now calculate two ratings; their Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI), and their Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII).

Please visit this IMO webpage for more information and to download their infographics explaining energy efficiency and carbon intensity requirements.

What is EEXI and CII?

The EEXI came into force on 1 November 2022 and applies to existing ships over 400 gt and above. The CII came into force on 1 January 2023 and applies to ships 5000 gt and above.

Both are short-term measures implemented to help reduce the carbon intensity of international shipping by 40% by 2030, compared to 2008.
