WiGS (Women in Green Shipping)
Our mission
Women in Green Shipping (WiGS) is an SGMF initiative to promote gender diversity in the maritime sector. Inspired by the International Maritime Organisation’s 2019 theme, Empowering Women in Maritime, WiGS celebrates women’s contributions to green shipping and encourages more women to join the industry.
Rebranded in 2023 from Women in Gas-fuelled Shipping, WiGS now supports all women in green shipping. The initiative aims to increase visibility and representation for women, recognising that their unique perspectives and skills are crucial for innovation and sustainability in maritime operations.
Our profiles
One of our core activities is to profile women working in a wide range of technical and business support roles in shipping internationally. Their profiles, which cover their personal career paths, are prominently featured on the SGMF website, newsletters, and social media platforms, ensuring widespread recognition and appreciation of their achievements.
Our events
WiGS also organises regular networking events to foster a sense of community and support among women in the industry. These events provide valuable opportunities for women to connect, share experiences and build professional relationships, with a view to strengthening the presence of women in green shipping.
WiGS Speaker Bank
To further promote gender diversity in the sector, we have set up the WiGS Speaker Bank. This offers the women involved in our programme opportunities to serve on panels and speak at industry events, and so enhance their visibility.
Volunteer speakers are listed on our website along with their LinkedIn profiles. These professionals can speak on a wide range of technical topics and share their personal career journeys into and within the maritime sector.
The Speaker Bank is a free resource available to conference organisers, who are encouraged to contact the speakers directly to discuss their events and specific needs. Our goal is to expand this list of volunteer speakers so that we can achieve gender-balanced panels and representation at industry events.
