Dear SGMF member,

As part of our 10 year anniversary in 2023, SGMF has teamed up with Special Interest Films in partnership with the World Ocean Council for the Ocean dimension of the UN Sustainable Goals.

This series will be a showcase from organisations globally, highlighting industry best practices, from those organisations and individuals who contribute positive and lasting changes to the issues facing the ocean.
Topics to be covered include; shipping, seafood, aquaculture, overfishing and sustainable supply chains, marine plastic pollution, algae cultivation, shipping, freight, logistics & global trade, fashion, retail, healthy oceans, offshore energy, healthy climate, marine reserves, and tourism.

Following MEPC80 this summer, I happened to see the UK BBC coverage of this IMO and UN milestone – they declared shipping was making great progress and had nuclear and wind options but failed to mention anything about what the industry is doing.
Whilst disappointing, it also made me think that it is up to us to tell the story of what we are doing and without taking safety for granted a film like this with the right message can go a long way.

We made a 2 minute animation film in 2019 following the GasFest outcomes which told the story of shipping fuels and SGMF up to then.

WE NEED YOUR FILM
I am asking you, and all of our members, to initially submit film, footage, interviews of regarding your business, your operations, your equipment but perhaps most importantly your people around the gas fuelled shipping industry.

This can be supply, production, distribution, manufacture, operations, bunkering, machinery spaces, ships and ports in operation – anything you think we might be able use.  I know many of you have some fantastic material out there and of course this is a great opportunity to promote your business but for us to advocate how we are doing this safely and sustainably – and making real progress.

The producers are going to compile a film of around 8-12 minutes to illustrate what we are doing and as you can imagine this is a huge task – I am challenging them to somehow get all of our 150 members into the film, by way of imagery, placement, footage and description.  There are opportunities for interviews to be inserted into the

story and we will be undertaking those in Paris in October.  Please indicate if you would like your organisation to be considered for that.
But right now time is short and this first request is for film from you so we can begin piecing the story together.

I want to thank you in advance for your contribution to this project, I am sure we will have a tremendous amount of material.  Below I have included some of the preamble from the producers for your information and some examples of their films for your reference.  In particular the film from CLIA, is useful and gives you an idea of what we are working on.

I look forward to your support and ask if you can share any footage, material and interview content by Friday 15 September (earlier if possible) ~ please send to [email protected]

Thank you once again.

Kind Regards,
Mark Bell

Video documentary - "The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel – Safely and sustainably on the route to Decarbonising shipping"

Here are (some of) the topics that we were looking to examine in the video documentary

  • What challenges and opportunities present themselves in SGMF? How has SGMF been addressing these?
  • Safety, decarbonisation, environment, collaborations, How is SGMF providing sustainable solutions for the Ocean?
  • Future direction and vision over the next 5-10 years, aligning with the UN Decade of Ocean Action, Science & Innovation
  • What example(s) of innovation, thought leadership, and industry best practices would you wish for SGMF to discuss, as an "Ocean Titan"?
